Donald Trump has just launched his latest geopolitical vanity project: a “Board of Peace” that looks more like a private club for wealthy dictators than a genuine international organization. And surprise, surprise: the world’s major powers have zero interest in playing this rigged game.

At a ceremony orchestrated at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Thursday, January 22nd, the American president signed the charter of this new organization supposedly designed to promote world peace. The problem? Major players on the international stage are conspicuously absent. China, Russia, India—all the major powers have either ignored the invitation or pretended not to receive it. Even America’s historical allies have opted for polite silence, which in diplomatic terms amounts to a firm “no thank you.”

A Very Select Club… of Not Exactly Democratic Countries

Of the 60 countries that confirmed receiving an invitation, only 35 agreed to join this Board. And guess who the lucky members are? Saudi Arabia (famous for its public executions), Turkey (where democracy is an increasingly abstract concept), Hungary (Europe’s laboratory for soft authoritarianism), and Belarus (Europe’s last dictatorship). Nothing but fine company, as they say.

Tellingly, the official list of members hasn’t been released. Probably because even Trump realizes that publishing a roster of authoritarian regimes and decomposing democracies doesn’t exactly scream “Board of Peace.”

Immediate and Predictable Tensions

The first memberships have already generated diplomatic friction worthy of a Netflix series. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed to join the Board, but only after complaining about the creation of a Gaza subcommittee where Turkey and Qatar—two countries he cordially despises—are expected to sit. Nothing like a peace board that starts with territorial disputes.

The invitation extended to Vladimir Putin particularly irritated Europeans. One wonders why inviting a man who invaded Ukraine would be problematic for a “Board of Peace.” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky logically refused to sit alongside the person who’s been bombing his country for years. A position one could describe as… reasonable?

As for Washington’s traditional allies, they chose diplomatic prudence, which translates to “we’re waiting to see how far this farce goes before officially declining.”

A Frontal Attack on the UN

Several countries refuse to support this project because it openly aims to compete with—or even replace—the United Nations. What was initially conceived as an initiative to end the war in Gaza has transformed into an attempt to completely rewrite the post-1945 world order.

The charter’s preamble, sent to “invited” states, declares unambiguously: “The Board of Peace is an international organization that aims to promote stability, restore reliable and legitimate governance, and ensure lasting peace in regions affected or threatened by conflicts.”

Translation: we’re going to do what the UN is supposed to do, but better. Well, “better” according to Trump.

The eight-page document immediately criticizes “approaches and institutions that have too often failed”—an allusion as subtle as a bulldozer to the UN—and calls for having “the courage” to “deviate” from them. It emphasizes “the need for a more agile and effective international peace organization.”

Because nothing says “agile and effective” like giving Donald Trump absolute veto power.

Norway and France highlighted the risk that this Board could undermine the international organization’s role. Which is a diplomatic way of saying: “You’re dismantling 80 years of multilateral cooperation to satisfy one man’s ego.”

In fact, none of the four other permanent members of the UN Security Council—supposedly guarantors of post-World War II multilateralism—have accepted Trump’s invitation.

France politely declined. The UK confirmed it won’t join “for now” (translation: never). China didn’t even bother responding. As for Russia, it’s pretending to study the proposal, probably to see if it’s worth trolling the West a bit more.

Trump: Lifetime President of a Phantom Board

If you thought this Board was a democratic organization where decisions would be made collectively, think again. Sure, decisions are theoretically made by “majority of member states,” each having “one vote.” But—and this is a huge “but”—they must first be “subject to the president’s approval.”

In other words, Donald Trump has absolute veto power over all decisions. He also controls the international agenda. It’s democracy Trump-style: you can vote, but only he decides.

Trump will be the “first president of the Board of Peace,” with powers that would make any autocrat green with envy. He’s the only one authorized to “invite” other heads of state to join the Board and can revoke their participation at any time, except in case of a “veto by a two-thirds majority of member states”—a condition almost impossible to meet.

His mandate resembles a disguised lifetime presidency. He can “designate a successor” at “any time” (betting on Ivanka or Don Jr.?) and can only be replaced in case of “voluntary resignation” or “incapacity” unanimously determined by the “executive council”—which he himself forms at his own discretion.

Basically, it’s a dictator position with extra steps.

This hyper-centralized role is enough to cool even the most compliant countries, especially after Trump’s recent stunts in early 2026: the kidnapping of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and threats to annex Greenland. Nothing screams “peace promoter” like kidnapping a foreign head of state and threatening to invade Danish territory.

Pay-to-Play: One Billion for a Permanent Seat

And now, the cherry on top of this rotten diplomatic cake: membership comes at a steep price.

The charter initially stipulates that “each member state serves a term of maximum three years.” But this limitation can be removed—guess how?—in exchange for a contribution of one billion dollars.

“This three-year term does not apply to member states that pay more than one billion dollars cash to the Board of Peace within the first year following the charter’s entry into force,” the founding document specifies.

Basically, if you want a permanent seat in Trump’s club, get out your checkbook. It’s pay-to-play on an international scale. And the text doesn’t even specify where this money will go. Into the Board’s coffers? Into Trump’s pockets? Mystery.

This exorbitant monetary condition has been largely swept under the rug by the American president’s allies. Only Canada had the courage to respond that it “won’t pay for a seat,” while diplomatically hedging. “It’s important to have a seat at the table to help shape this process from within,” a senior advisor to the Canadian government specified, adding that “details remain to be worked out (…) to formalize next steps.”

Translation: “We don’t want to pay, but we also don’t want to be completely excluded in case this circus becomes real.”

The New World Order According to Trump: A Private Club for Wealthy Autocrats

What Trump pompously calls his “Board of Peace” looks more like a geopolitical country club than a credible international organization. It’s a system where the American president has all the power, where membership costs a billion dollars, where decisions require his personal approval, and where the only enthusiastic countries are authoritarian regimes.

The irony is almost too perfect: a “Board of Peace” presided over by a man who threatens to annex foreign territories, kidnaps heads of state, and just reinstated gunboat diplomacy.

Welcome to the new world order Trump-style: authoritarian, transactional, and profoundly cynical. Exactly what the world needed in 2026.
