A diplomatic evening came to an abrupt end at the World Economic Forum. On Tuesday, January 20, Christine Lagarde, who heads the European Central Bank, walked out of an official reception organized as part of the Davos summit before the meal concluded. Her hasty departure followed a particularly scathing intervention against Europe, delivered by Howard Lutnick, Commerce Secretary in the Trump administration, as reported by Reuters.

The event brought together some 200 major figures from political and economic spheres during a private dinner orchestrated by Larry Fink, co-chair of the Forum. Howard Lutnick, considered a loyal supporter of Donald Trump, was scheduled to close the evening with a speech.

According to testimonies from several guests present, the ECB chief stood up and left the premises while the American representative launched into harsh criticism of Europe, provoking indignant reactions among the audience. The atmosphere rapidly deteriorated, prompting other participants to follow Christine Lagarde’s lead and abandon the table in turn.

A Reception Cut Short

Faced with this delicate situation, event organizers chose to end the dinner prematurely, which concluded before dessert was even served.

Contacted after the incident, neither the European Central Bank, nor the U.S. Department of Commerce, nor the World Economic Forum organizers agreed to provide an official statement regarding this tense diplomatic episode.
