In what observers are calling “the most unexpected gift exchange since the invention of re-gifting,” former President Donald Trump reportedly surprised his wife Melania with his Nobel Peace Prize—a prize he has yet to actually receive.
Sources close to the couple say Trump presented the imaginary award during a private moment at Mar-a-Lago, wrapping it in what he described as “the most beautiful, most expensive gold foil paper you’ve ever seen.” The gesture came as a complete shock to Melania, who was reportedly expecting something more traditional, like space.
“Many people are saying I deserve the Nobel Peace Prize,” Trump allegedly told Melania while gesturing at an empty velvet box. “More than anyone, actually. More than Obama, that I can tell you. And because I’m such a generous guy, such a romantic, I’m giving it to you.”
Melania’s reaction has not been officially confirmed, though witnesses claim to have heard the sound of one hand not clapping.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee, when reached for comment, reiterated that Trump has not won a Nobel Peace Prize, has not been awarded a Nobel Peace Prize, and that the Committee does not ship prizes to Mar-a-Lago, regardless of how many times someone calls asking about tracking information.
Nevertheless, Trump insists the gesture proves he is “the most thoughtful husband in history, perhaps ever,” adding that the prize “would have been mine anyway, probably next year, or the year after that, they’re looking into it very strongly.”
As of press time, the empty velvet box has been placed in a position of honor at Mar-a-Lago, right next to Trump’s collection of letters from Kim Jong Un and a framed certificate declaring him Time Magazine’s “Person of the Year, Every Year, Forever.
