Donald Trump is causing widespread concern. He multiplies irrational decisions. His first year of a second term has upended the international architecture established after 1945. And the worst is yet to come.
Rule Through Fear and Intimidation
Under Trump, the United States has rapidly transformed into a rogue state adopting mafia-like tactics: threats to annex Greenland, punitive trade sanctions against Brazil, kidnapping of the Venezuelan leader. These maneuvers seek to secure vital resources in the rivalry with China.
On the domestic front, two ambitions are taking shape: establishing semi-dictatorial power (going further than Orban’s model in Hungary) and orchestrating a massive cultural regression. Universities, media, and public institutions are being silenced, certain teachings are banned, and school curricula are being rewritten. Immigration services have become forces of repression. These methods evoke a dark era of the 1930s…
Under the Trump presidency, the entire nation suffers. Inflation weighs heavily on daily life, particularly for middle-class households. The unemployment rate is rising at an alarming pace, while debt reaches dizzying heights ($35 trillion). The country will take a long time to recover from this period, even if Democrats return to power.
On the international stage, the situation is even more serious. Trump respects no rules and no actors. He brazenly seizes what doesn’t belong to him. He bombs, plunders, intimidates, and crushes his opponents. He brandishes the threat of 200% tariffs on French wines and champagnes if France refuses to join his “Peace Council,” membership in which costs one billion dollars. His ambition: to supplant the UN.
Could this leader be suffering from psychological disorders?
A Disturbing Psychiatric Profile
Across the Atlantic, the president’s mental stability raises serious questions, well beyond the psychiatric community. In early 2017, a petition demanding his removal gathered 60,000 signatures from mental health professionals.
Peter Fraenkel, an expert consulted by Envoyé spécial at the time, believes that the president’s psychological dysfunctions compromise his ability to fulfill his duties. According to him, this fear transcends partisan divisions and even touches some Republicans who question his competence to lead.
The psychologist identifies a pathological narcissistic personality disorder, coupled with megalomania. He notes manifestations such as an excessive evaluation of his own intellectual abilities and an inability to consider others’ opinions.
The observed symptoms are multiple and concerning. There is a compulsive tendency to lie, even about easily verifiable facts, as if objective reality had no importance compared to his own version of events. His public statements alternate between moments of apparent lucidity and incoherent or reality-detached remarks. Experts also note marked impulsivity in decision-making, disproportionate emotional reactions to setbacks, and behavioral instability that makes his political positions unpredictable from one day to the next.
This volatility is particularly worrying in the context of strategic decisions involving national and international security. Some psychologists even mention progressive cognitive decline, visible in his increasing speech difficulties and more frequent factual confusions during public appearances.
“Destructive” Narcissism
Beyond ordinary narcissism, the expert evokes “destructive narcissism,” a variant not yet officially classified, combining narcissism, antisocial conduct, violence, and cruelty. According to him, the contempt and mistreatment inflicted on others would reveal a mental imbalance.
This type of personality is characterized by a total absence of empathy and an inability to recognize others’ suffering. Affected individuals perceive their peers as mere instruments serving their personal ambitions. They manipulate, humiliate, and crush without the slightest remorse, even finding perverse satisfaction in dominating and humiliating others. This pathology is often accompanied by latent paranoia: the permanent conviction of being surrounded by enemies and traitors fuels an infernal cycle of retaliation and revenge. For these personalities, any criticism is experienced as a personal attack justifying a disproportionate response, thus creating a climate of fear and submission in their entourage.
The gravity of the situation is deemed extreme: entrusting nuclear codes to a person presenting such mental instability would constitute a considerable danger, not only for the United States, but for world peace.
